In an increasingly globalized and competitive academic landscape, PhD researchers are crossing borders—both geographical and cultural—at an unprecedented rate. This journey, while enriching, comes with unique challenges and opportunities that shape their academic and professional trajectories. Our webinar delves into the heart of this experience, offering a comprehensive exploration of the intercultural navigation and career-building strategies that define the modern doctoral journey. The webinar does not only shed light on some personal and professional hurdles PhD researchers face during this journey but also provides actionable insights for young scholars (PhD researchers, post-doctorate researchers, assistant professors, etc.) as well as for supervisors and other policymakers in academia who strive to support them. Devina Sarwatay discusses key aspects one needs to be mindful of during their journey as an Early Career Researcher (ECR): Responding to Call for Papers (CFPs) for conferences and publications; Building communities and networks as an ECR; Seeking future opportunities as an ECR. Through her own experience, Taijrani Rampersaud-Skorka develops the five pillars of resilience with regards to navigating a similar yet different culture when conducting research in international context: self, communication, social support, networking and stakeholders, reality. She summarizes her experiences as a doctoral researcher by providing five core values she found to be invaluable.
