Résumé

Présentation

This booklet is the result of research conducted at the "Centre d'Analyse Syntaxique", Univesity of Metz, in the course of the 1973-1974 Academic year.

It is composed of two chapters which were meant to be published in the volume "Current Trends in Linguistics", devoted to a study of linguistics in France ; Mouton Publishers were not in a position to publish it.

This contribution was first written in French ; it has been translated - and at times improved - by some of my colleagues in the Department of English Studies at the University of Metz : Mr J.-J. Blanchot, Miss C.-M. Charpentier, Mr J.-C. Lejosne and C. Peel. They have been efficiently assisted by Mr T. Haldeman, Mr N. Henderson, Mr A. Dickson, teaching assistants, and Miss M.-P. Dreydemis, student teacher.

This booklet has thus become a joint publication of the "Centre d'Analyse Syntaxique" and the Department of English Studies at the "Faculté des Lettres".
