Présentation :

La Maman et la putain (1973) is a landmark in french film History. Jean Eustache's overlong and over talkative masterpiece reflects post-68 turmoil, most of all the feminism impetus. However, Alexandre, the main male character, seems to ignore the rise of the MLF (the french Women's Lib) and the fight for Birth control and Abortion. Ruthlessly torn between two women, Marie and Veronika, he would rather get back to Marcel Proust sophisticated dandyism than commit himself into debates and controversies about women's rights. But this willful blindness doesn't sound hollow at all : it is the very sign that the survival of male chauvinism is the central topic of the film and its times.
